Control Like A Pro - VATME's Outline of ATC Training

The VATSIM Middle East Division works hard to provide the best training possible for our Air Traffic Controllers through a centralized training system. We use real world procedures and documentation to train our air traffic controllers so that while having fun on the VATSIM Network, they are learning and understanding the various theories and operation tactics used in the real world. This is what makes the VATSIM Network, by and large, different from any other network - realism.

A Standard Training Program is illustrated below:

Entry. A new air traffic controller must first take a standardized exam that allows them to be promoted from Pilot/Observer to Student 1. This course is easy and is administered by the Air Traffic Controller's FIR Chief.

Student 1 to Student 3. A Student 1 Controller is allowed to operate the Ground and Tower Position. After a certain amount of time, they will be "checked out" on Tower and Ground, meaning that they will be allowed to operate, solo, these positions without the need for any mentoring. Depending on the controller, this "check out" phase can take anyway from one week to one month.

Student 1 Training for Approach Phase. At some time after check out, a Student 1 will be mentored for the Approach/Departure position and will experience radar operations. This phase is the most crucial, and also the most difficult. This stage may last anywhere from one to five months, depending on the controller. A Student 1 must always have a mentor online if they are manning the approach position.

Student 3 Exam and Approach Check Out. After a certain amount of time on the Approach/Departure position, a Student 1 may elect to take their  Student 3 Exam. This exam will consist of a "written" portion, which will have questions about radar positions and other material relevant to the approach/departure position. After the written portion, an "OTS" (over the shoulder) exam is conducted online. Traffic will be heavy, and the stress will be great - however, passing this portion of the exam not only gives a controller their Student 3 rating, but also their "check out" and will thus allow them to operate the approach/departure position solo.

Student 3 Training for Control. After some time on Approach, a Student 3 may elect to begin training for the Control Position. Control positions are the largest positions in a FIR, and are one of the most tricky positions to operate. This portion of the training may take one to five months, depending on the air traffic controller, though it is usually shorter compared to the others, a result of the controller being introduced to radar operations while training for approach/departure. This also involves a written and over the shoulder examination that will result in a Controller 1 rating, which will allow the air traffic controller to man all positions except GULF_FSS (unless approved).

The process as a whole can take up to one year depending on the air traffic controller.

While we understand that VATSIM is a hobby, we strive to ensure that while having fun, controllers learn and understand that nature of their activities. It is truly a gift to have such realism in an online network, and VATSIM Middle East will work hard to ensure that such a realistic standard is met in the Middle East.

To request training, please first contact your Home FIR Chief. Provide them with your Name, VATSIM ID Number, and Email, as well as the times you are free for testing and mentoring.
